Many workers find themselves in need of a little extra income every now and then. However, it can be extremely difficult to find a second job that is willing to fit around your current work hours; even when you have a day or two a week that are free. Our finances often bring hardship into our lives, especially when we have family or loved ones to support, or we’re trying to make it through the year on our own.
This post explores why teaching is a great way for an individual to earn a bit of extra income, and how you, too, can become qualified to teach (if you aren’t already, of course!). If you are already teaching, this article is still relevant to you. There are more opportunities out there for casual teaching than one would think.
Online tutoring is a great way to earn some extra income and the market for students to learn English as a Second Language (ESL) is rapidly growing. However, due to its advantages and flexibility, it is extremely popular among teachers and therefore positions are competitive and it can be difficult for new teachers to find work.
As an online tutor, ideally, you will be a master of the subject that you tutor others in. You may be teaching native English speakers or children and adults who use English as their second language. Typically, most online tutoring websites will require you to have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and 1 year's teaching experience.

Once you’ve finished your application, you’ll be asked to complete an online interview, as well as a mock class to show your teaching prowess. Many places will ask that you have at least one year of teaching experience, but some will still be happy to take you on as a teacher if you can prove that you are well-educated and have had sufficient training in TEFL/TESOL.
Having a TEFL certificate can increase your chances of being invited to interview and it can increase the hourly rate you are offered for classes.
If you are not already TEFL certified, you can make the most of our discount on an internationally recognized 125-hour TEFL course. It is a great accreditation to have.

Across the world, there are many summer schools that require teachers and tutors. These schools typically take place in major cities around the world; but particularly in Europe, America, and the UK. Countries in Asia do not typically offer summer schools, as they prefer for their international teachers to take on contracts for the full school year. However, in other parts of the world, summer schools and camps are extremely popular.
Typically, you’ll be expected to have both teaching experience and usually a TEFL/TESOL certification. Summer schools and camps last anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months over the typical summer period (May to September). Many schools and organizations will pay lump sums of money over the course of a contract; most contracts are between 2 weeks and a month, but some places will offer an extension if their summer teaching period is longer or they feel you’re a good fit for their summer team.
Qualifications needed: TEFL/TESOL certificate (minimum 120 hours), Bachelor’s degree.
How much you can earn: $300 - $400 a week, but this does vary.
Teaching hours: 20 – 30 hours a week.
How to apply: Search for summer school opportunities or summer camps taking place throughout the year. TEFL.org has many vacancies advertised at the moment.
What this means for you
This may be a lot of information to take in, but what you should take away from this is that you can easily become an online teacher or teach in a summer school to earn extra income. Whether or not you’re already a teacher, as long as you have a University degree, you can become an online tutor and teach people your subject during your free time. If you have a couple of months available to get certified in TEFL/TESOL, then your job opportunities will skyrocket. You’ll have the qualifications necessary to teach online and around the world, and you could even make a career out of it if you were looking for a change.
When you start contemplating whether this is the right path for you, remember that it’s rare to find a company that will pay for your TEFL/TESOL certificate, so you may need to invest into this yourself.
Teaching is a great way to earn some extra income around your current job because so many schools and organizations are willing to offer flexible contracts. You can work from home, or spend your summer earning some extra cash and traveling the globe!
